Of Colorful Stories and Raising Flowers.

Small towns are a wonderful place to grow and learn. Sometimes a book signing becomes a reunion of sorts with family, friends, college buddies with local political favorites attending and purchasing your book.  Politics can be a hard road to travel; strong southern ideals, wisdom and serious humor are rampant in the new book written by Steve Flowers. This book is called Of Goats & Governors Six Decades of Colorful Alabama Political Stories.

Local historian and publisher of The Southern Star newspaper Joe Adams introduced Steve Flowers to the crowd. The Southern Star was one of the first newspapers to regularly run his weekly column. Steve's column is now read in over 60 papers.

Steve began his career in politics as a page in the Alabama Legislature at age 12 and worked

Reading is therapy and every dog has a story!

We had the pleasure of having the therapy dogs visit us twice in one day. Both story hours had a wonderful time meeting these beautiful creatures. Both German Shepards were born with a sweet disposition and are actually father and son. Nothing like training a child in the ways of the world and how to be a model citizen of the therapy dog association.

Dogs are wonderful and always enjoy the book you choose.

Every young library patron had the chance to read to the dogs. This beautiful dog heard Dr. Seuss's

Taste of S'mores and cookbook making

Every child, if given the chance, enjoys learning about cooking and choosing what to cook for the family. The cookbook craft chosen for the children to make included tons of easy snacks from the Taste of Home website. We had a difficult time deciding which recipes to add to the cookbook--there were so many choices! Our classes all agreed we made cool choices.

Basic family-friendly recipes were the choices of the day. These included things the children could

Bag O Jokes is a little brown bag of happiness.

Every child loves a great joke. Children hear, learn and tell others, especially if they find it funny.
Do you know what dog keeps the best time?.....A watch dog!...We bet you knew that once and we just helped you remember it again. Wait there's more....

What kind of paper makes you itch?....give up? The answer is scratch paper!

Everyone had a great time putting the jokes on a tongue depressor, joke on one side, answer on the

August Coloring Contest Winner

Another coloring contest has come and gone. Children's libraries can be busy places behind the scenes. We had 5 wonderful winners of the August coloring contest. Only one winner named Kaleb arrived to claim his prize. He got to choose a free book from our Children's Librarians free book collection. Kaleb also received a little brown bag of goodies like erasers, mini airplane and such.
Great job to everyone who turned in a color page.

The Delightful D.M Raver imagions dragons.

     D. M. Raver came to Ozark and had a book signing during our Friends of the Library book sale. You couldn't have asked for a better book lovers event to meet potential readers. Meeting authors is a fun experience, you learn how they think and what drives them to write. Quite few times I have met authors and was personally reminded that I am on the correct path. Networking is a vital element in most every field and publishing is no different.  Danielle is a former Lisenby elementary teacher, quite a few of you will already know her from the when she worked in our local school system. Several other local authors had a chance to network with her as well.

Squirrels, soldiers and Purple Hearts

Value is measured sometimes in what we do for others, soldiers live this and sometimes we have no idea. My friend Micaela Bensko is the Vice President of Rebuilding America’s Warriors an organization whose mission is providing free reconstructive surgery to our troops returning from Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond. Micaela is the author of a beautiful book entitled The Soldier and The Squirrel, which is about a soldier who returns with a purple heart and severe injuries. We read this beautiful book during our story time.

Gifts, a Starfighter and higher powers

Every gift has a story. Have you ever noticed the beautiful 6-  foot Star Wars Jedi Starfighter flying quietly in the children’s library? One of our patrons constructed the replica of Anakin Skywalker’s Starfighter from recycled and found materials.

Cakes, books and fundraising with friends!

A morning filled with books, beautiful friends, mouthwatering homemade cakes and fundraising. These friends work hard to help you get books for cheap; some of those books were free.

Always check the sign outside when you're driving past so you don't miss something you want to attend. We ALWAYS post the Friends of the Library Book Sale dates and times. We have it posted to Facebook, Twitter and our website as well.

Colorful elephants and lasagna noodle prints.

Did you know there is a book about a fish who had a hat? We read the book while having popsicles to cool us all off from the last wave of the summer heat before school starts. This is not my hat is by New York Times #1 bestselling author Jon Klassen. Winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal. Ozark-Dale County Public Library is widely known for keeping Caldecott and Newberry books on hand. Please check the card catalog to make sure the one you're interested in is available.

Coming to terms with using the side of a lasagna noodle to make a print.
The early story time children had a great group of troopers who learned how to use an everyday object such as a lasagna noodle to make a print. They had a wonderful time learning to cut better, carefully use glue and paint with several different sizes of noodles.

None of the children in the story time had ever seen this book before but they all enjoyed it very much.

Wildlife Biologist - Rick Tharp's Program July 2015

Wildlife Biologist Rick Tharp with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources came to visit on Wednesday July 29th. He presented an informative program of poisonous plants, snakes and information on how to identify both plants and snakes in our area. A number of children and adults attended this program and got answers to questions they had about a snake they had seen in their yard.
